New book asks “Is the United States in a New Cold War?”

Fifty great American leaders offer advice to the Trump administration on national security, military intelligence, space, diplomacy, economics and more

November 25, 2024 — Fifty great American leaders offer their best advice to the incoming Trump administration in a bold new book IMAGINE: Winning the New Cold War (Legacy Books). The 50 authors have decades of experience serving America in leadership positions in both the public and private sectors, from NATO, the Pentagon, NASA, the CIA, the FBI, the NSC, academia, think tanks, the media, and more.

The non-partisan book asks two simple questions: Is the United States in a New Cold War? If so, how do we win? Each author wrote his or her essay independent of the others, so the result is a compilation of individual viewpoints, not a collective report. Their ideas range from broad reforms to technical strategies and, while all agree that Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea are threats to U.S. security, some warn that the bigger threat is internal political division.

None of the contributors are serving in public positions, so they were free to offer their own, unvarnished advice. Authors range from NATO Supreme Allied Commander Wesley Clark to undercover CIA operative Luke Bencie, from career diplomat Elizabeth Shackleford to Presidential Advisor on space Mark Albrecht, from FBI deputy director William J. Esposito to NSA director William Studeman.

"These fifty authors—many of whom I know personally—have made a major contribution to American national-security thinking,” said former National Security Advisor John R. Bolton in a testimonial for the book. “What is most important is not where the majority view lies, nor where there is agreement or disagreement. Their unique contribution is the wide-ranging, thoroughly professional discussion of the diverse threats we and our allies face. In a time where pure politics, often personal and unpleasant, dominate the national policy debate, this volume is a critical antidote.”

The book is available in paperback, audio, and eBook. In an unusual move, publisher Legacy Books and the authors will be delivering a complimentary hardcover edition of the book to key members of the 119th Congress involved in national security, all cabinet secretaries, White House senior staff, and presidential appointments across more than a dozen federal agencies and commissions.
